Our Story
Soap 4 Hope and Literacy Corporation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and families through hygiene, literacy, and hope.
We believe every child deserves access to the basic tools for learning, growing, and dreaming—starting with clean hands and an open book.
ABOUT US
Soap for Hope and Literacy was founded by Ronnette Curls, an educator, children's book author and illustrator, and community advocate with a passion for helping others live healthier and more successful lives.
After witnessing the growing need for basic hygiene supplies and educational support among children, families, and individuals experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, Ronnette created Soap for Hope and Literacy to address two critical challenges: poor hygiene and low literacy rates.
We believe that every person deserves access to the essentials needed to thrive—cleanliness, dignity, education, and opportunity.
What is Hygiene Poverty?
Everyone Deserves to Feel Clean, Healthy, and Confident
Hygiene poverty happens when a person or family does not have enough money to regularly purchase basic hygiene and personal-care necessities.
For many families, paying for food, housing, utilities, transportation, and other essential bills may leave very little money for everyday hygiene products.
This can mean going without basic items such as:

HOW CAN HYGIENE POVERTY AFFECT CHILDREN?
Not having access to hygiene necessities can affect much more than how a child looks or smells. It can affect their health, confidence, education, friendships, and overall well-being.
A child experiencing hygiene poverty may:

Feel embarrassed or uncomfortable around other children

Have difficulty concentrating at school

Avoid participating in activities

Experience teasing or bullying

Miss school because they do not feel clean or prepared

Develop preventable dental, skin, or other hygiene-related problems
Some children may have to share a toothbrush, go without washing their hair, wear clothing that has not been washed, or go without menstrual-care products simply because their household cannot afford everything they need.
HYGIENE AND EDUCATION GO HAND IN HAND
When children have access to basic hygiene necessities, they can arrive at school feeling clean, comfortable, confident, and ready to learn.
Providing something as simple as a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, clean socks, a comb, or a washcloth can make a meaningful difference in a child's day.
